Rob Cowling has been involved in the Health & Fitness industry for nearly 30 years, initially in the area of education & training and later in a number of "wellness" initiatives. He established the first research-based weight management programme at the University of Cape Town's Medical School in 1983, developed wellness centres in Durban and Cape Town focusing on corporate health and obesity and later received the Jaycee Distinguished Citizens Award for "his creative and holistic approach in developing a healthier community". He introduced his NUTRIFIT Wellness Programme at Brookdale Health Hydro in KZN in 1990, an establishment widely recognized as a leading Destination Spa in South Africa. The NUTRIFIT home delivery food system, which was introduced a year later, was endorsed by both the Heart Foundation of SA and ADSA. Cowling was the first South African Physiologist to present to the NHS at the Royal College of Physicians in London in the area of Lifestyle Management and Preventative Health, and in 1999 was appointed as a faculty member of the Foundation for Professional Development, the educational arm of MASA. He acted as scientific advisor to the Health & Racquet/Virgin Active group for 10 years and has consulted widely on wellness programmes in South Africa and abroad. He was directly involved in the launch of the Sport Science Institute of South Africa in 1995. In 2000 Cowling was appointed as Spa & Wellness consultant to Arabella South Africa Holdings and in this capacity was responsible for developing the concept and strategy and setting up operations for AltiraSPA at both the Western Cape Hotel & Spa and the ArabellaSheraton Grand Hotel (now the Westin Grand) in Cape Town, both of which he operated under a management contract through his company ProHealth Consulting. He was part of an international team that established the AltiraSPA brand in Europe for the Arabella group. After a short stint with SANTe Spa & Wellness Centres (Pty) Ltd as their Chief Operating Officer in November 2003, Cowling brought together his knowledge and extensive experience in the broad field of "wellness" to launch ONEwellness, a Spa and Wellness brand which represented an integrated approach to the worlds of "Fitness", "Spa" and "Skincare". With his growing interest in the fields of Bio-energetics and Energy Medicine, Rob Cowling launched his latest concept, QUANTUMSPA, at the iconic RadissonBlu Hotel on the Atlantic Ocean in Granger Bay, Cape Town at the beginning of 2011. |
